It was a great joy for us to see Father Gallitzin’s cause for Canonization formally open on March 11, 2007. For additional information and prayer cards or to report favors through the intercession of the Servant of God Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, please visit the official web site: www.demetriusgallitzin.org.
(Taken from the Decree Naming Saint Michael the Archangel a Minor Basilica of the Catholic Church. September 9, 1996):
“For two centuries the community of Loretto in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, looking back with pride on its blessed beginnings, has revered the famed priest Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin as its spiritual father and founder. Coming first as a visitor, he returned to establish a mission station and worked for forty years to nurture the Catholic Faith in this area. Today his burial place, marked by a noble monument, is held in public honor. Near it, on a prominent hillside, stands the sacred shrine dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. Sanctified by two hundred years of communal prayer, and esteemed in the Diocese as the spiritual cradle of regional Catholic life, this site has served throughout the decades as the wellspring of Catholic activity for the whole region.”
