Extern Sisters: Guardians of the Enclosure

Our faithful and saintly departed Extern Sisters

Extern Sisters are Religious engaged in the external service of the monastery in order to allow the cloistered Nuns to maintain an entirely contemplative way of life. They are called by God to a special vocation of generous service to the Community and hospitality to the many visitors and pilgrims who travel to Loretto. By the profession of public simple vows of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience, they consecrate themselves totally to the Lord and join the family of the Discalced Carmelites, whose charism they share.

Extern Sisters wear the same Habit as the Nuns and profess the same Rule and Constitutions, but by reason of their proper office, they are not bound to observe the law of Enclosure and have, in addition, their own Statutes.

Although we do not currently have any Extern Sisters, our monastery is specially designed to accommodate Externs. In addition to a Public Chapel, there is an Extern Sacristy, Reception area with Religious Goods, Speakrooms and two floors of Extern living quarters.

The grace of an Extern vocation is rare but precious and they have the enviable duty of preparing the altar and Chapel for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass each day and of attending to our Chaplains and visiting Priests.

Extern Sisters express in loving actions the prayers and aspirations of the Cloistered Nuns who, together with them, desire to be “love in the Heart of the Church.”

If you are a mature, deeply pious, Catholic woman between the ages of 21 and 40 and recognize in this vocation the answer to the desires of your heart, we welcome you to contact us for more information.
